5 Tips to Embracing Change

Imagine this; it's a random Tuesday morning and you head to your routine spin class only to find out your favorite teacher moved to the Caribbean. Or in another scenario, the company you work for is laying people off and unfortunately had to let you go. Life has a funny way of throwing us curveballs, doesn't it? When changes are beyond our control, it can feel like we're adrift in uncharted waters. An incredibly scary situation can revolve around our health. What if you, a person who has embraced fitness your whole life, is suddenly told they could never lift weights again by your physician? Or that you've been diagnosed with arthritis and your days of running are over? Let's call it what it is, crappy. It is so crappy to deal with drastic changes especially those regarding health and beyond our control. But have no fear my friend! Here are five empowering tips to help you not just cope but thrive in the face of changes beyond your control.

1. Acceptance: The First Step to Empowerment

The first step in embracing change is acceptance. Acknowledge that uncertainty is a part of life, and resisting it only adds to the stress. Paradoxically, accepting change gives us a sense of empowerment and control. By acknowledging that we cannot control external events, we redirect our focus to the aspects we can control. In other words, our responses, attitudes, and actions. This empowerment fosters a proactive approach to change. By accepting the reality of the situation, you empower yourself to focus on what you can control and find strength in navigating the unknown.

2. Shift Your Perspective: From Threat to Opportunity

Change, especially when beyond our control, is often viewed as a threat. Instead, position the change as a new challenge to conquer. Consider how you can leverage the situation to develop new skills or uncover hidden strengths. Shifting your mindset from resistance to acceptance opens the door to positive possibilities.Remember that feeling of doing something great when it at first seemed impossible? Like, that one math equation? Or getting that one job? When we accomplish a goal, we release a chemical in our brains called dopamine which is that feel good hormone that makes you smile. Humans often thrive on challenges and goal-oriented tasks so try to see embracing the change as an opportunity to test your resilience, problem-solving skills, and adaptability. This perspective can transform the change into a stimulating endeavor rather than a disruption.

3. Find Your Anchors: Stability Amidst Change

Identify the stable elements in your life – the constants that remain despite external changes such as listening to your favorite song or cooking your favorite meal. Sometimes it's your values, relationships, or personal practices, that anchors a sense of stability and security. Having touch-points that remain unchanged can be a source of comfort as you navigate through uncertain times.

4. Embrace Flexibility: The Art of Adapting

Rather than rigidly clinging to a predefined path, be open to alternative routes. Remember, a bend in the road is not the end unless you fail to make the turn. In the face of changes, flexibility becomes your superpower. Embrace the art of adapting to new circumstances. Emphasize the positive aspects and potential opportunities that the change may bring. When I was moving from Florida to Chicago, I was so nervous, not only because the weather shift, but more so because it was going to be the first time so far away from my family living on my own. I began second guessing myself and almost didn't attend Loyola University because of my skepticism. One of my teachers told me not to back out of my decision. She made a joke but also really believed I would be successful in Chicago. She told me I would probably meet lifelong friends, create amazing memories, and get a whole new perspective of life. She was right about every single thing. I am a person who is motivated by success and outcomes, so when life throws me a curveball, I look deeply at the positive potential outcomes. Change aligns with long-term goals and aspirations whether that's to get the education you deserve or meet the people you care so deeply for. Focusing on the benefits can shift your mindset from resistance to excitement about the possibilities ahead.

5. Focus on Self-Care: Nurture Your Resilience

Changes beyond your control can be emotionally draining. Prioritize self-care to nurture your mental and emotional resilience. Establish routines that bring you joy, practice mindfulness, and engage in activities that replenish your energy. Taking care of your well-being equips you with the strength needed to face whatever challenges come your way.

Embracing changes beyond your control is a courageous journey that requires resilience, adaptability, and a positive outlook. Remember, in the ebb and flow of life, you have the power to not just survive but thrive.
